A Study on Practice of Weaning and Immunization for Infants in a Rural Area

Abstract
This survey was conducted to find out the practice of weaning (or supplementary feeding) and immunization for infants in a rural area, from Sep. 1 to Sep. 30 of 1974 through home visit interviews with 419 married women residing at the main island of the Deog jeogs in Ong jin-Gun, Gyeonggi Province.
The obtained findings are summarized as follows:
1) Most of the interviewed had weaned when their children were over 7 months and those who had weaned when their children 7 months were no more than 6.9%. 12.2%, 16.9% and 44.2% of the interviewed had weaned when their children were 7-9 months, 9-12 months and over 13 months respectively.
2) As the reasons for weaning, "Naturally" ranked first with the rate of 24.6 %. "Became pregnant" was 6.2%.
3) Among the interviewed, 72.1% had had the correct knowledge of immuni¡þzation for infancy, while as many as 27.9% had lacked in the knowledge.
It is considerable that many (22.7%) of them were indifferent to the necessity
of immunization for their last children.
4) The rates of vaccination that the interviewed had their children immunized against Poliomyelitis, D.P.T., B.C.G. and Smallpox during infancy were 73.5%, 71.4%, 68.9% and 64.4% respectively. The vaccination rate against Measles was far lower than the above four vaccines with the rate of 34.8%
